Research has shown that oxygen therapy may be helpful when used alongside cancer treatments and there is much more information about Hyperbaric oxygen on this Macmillan cancer support page.

HBO treatment may:

  • Reduce cancer growth
  • Improve the delivery of chemotherapy drugs to a tumour
  • Result in an increase in the body’s own stem cells. These are blood cells at the earliest stage of development in the bone marrow. Because Oxygen treatment can increase stem cells it may have a role in stem cell transplantation – a treatment sometimes used in haematological (blood) cancers

The most common use of Oxygen Therapy is in treating the side effects of radiotherapy in Cancer patients.

Research has shown that HBO treatment may help treat the following:

  • Chronic radiation cystitis
  • Osteoradionecrosis
  • Tooth removal
  • Chronic radiation effects on the bowel

Your hospital specialist can advise you whether Oxygen Therapy is appropriate in your situation. They may refer you for Oxygen treatment if you have long-term side effects from radiotherapy treatment that have not responded to standard treatments.
